How did you get started in the beauty industry?
During my third year studying Dance & Performance at university, I hit a wall. I didn’t have the same burning passion I had growing up and I began to feel like I was trying to mould myself into somebody that I wasn’t, which left me feeling really unhappy.
So, I decided to make a change. I still wanted to do something creative and was drawn to the beauty industry. I thought make-up artistry could be a good option, but soon realised that again that burning passion was not there. However, shortly after that realisation I became obsessed with watching nail videos on YouTube. I was fascinated by the endless possibilities and the creativity and skill that goes into a set of nails. Before I knew it, I was researching local nail courses. I booked a spot on a course with the last of my student loan, and the rest is history!
What makes your work stand out?
After three years and a lot of experimenting, I’ve only now found my niche. In a word, it’s minimalistic, which in a world where there is no limit to nail design it’s pretty unique to work on natural nails, offering gel manicures and minimalistic nail art.
What’s your beauty philosophy?
In my opinion inner beauty radiates outwards. Which is why it’s not just about being the best version of yourself on the outside, but the best version of yourself on the inside that defines true beauty to me.
What inspires you?
I get lots of my inspiration from fellow nail artists on social media and Pinterest, as well as online magazines and blogs. I love how accessible inspiration can be - everything is just one click away.
What do you love about Tribe?
Tribe’s passion for inclusivity and togetherness is what initially drew my attention to the brand, as I believe that the beauty industry can always do more to be inclusive of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and more. But that was just the start. When I finally tried their tools, I was hooked. They are everything that a beautician needs to offer clients the best experience and an impeccable standard of workmanship.
What’s your favourite Tribe tool and why?
I love the contoured cuticle tool I can honestly say that I have never used a cuticle pusher that works like this one. Only the slightest pressure is needed and the tapered edge fits the corners of the nail bed like a glove, giving us nail techs the ability to create the perfect blank canvas to paint on.
What do you enjoy about your job?
As cliché as it sounds, everything! I really enjoy being my own boss, and having clients that turn into good friends. But I don’t even mind the bad days; where time gets away from you and you end up running behind schedule. When you double book yourself and have a mini heart attack when two clients walk through the door. Or even when you are forced to deal with a picky client. These days are what make the good days even more amazing – but they also teach you so much about how to deal with people, time management, and planning that I know will stand me in good stead.
What advice would you give to people starting out in the beauty?
Firstly, remember there’s only one you. Don’t try to be anybody but yourself. Of course, take inspiration from others and the world around you, but work on finding where your passion lies and who you are as an artist. You will get into a rut every now and then, that’s normal – don’t sweat it - you’re only human. But how you push through that hard time defines you as an artist, and if that passion is there, it will gradually guide you through an amazing journey and a flourishing career.
What are your future goals?
Now that I’ve truly figured out who I am as an artist I can’t wait to develop that further. I also want to work on my educator status and teach students from all over the country, and hopefully one day I’ll have my own brick and mortar studio.
When you’re not working what are you usually up to?
The recent pandemic has taught me lots about myself and what makes me feel good inside. Aside from my love of fashion, I discovered during the pandemic how much I enjoy being outdoors. I love a nice walk with beautiful scenery, hopefully with a cocktail bar at the end of it.
